Don’t worry, neither were we at first. Keep reading to see what changed our minds and made us big fans of this hot new CBD commodity in wine country!

What is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in the hemp plant. Hemp typically has the highest concentrations of CBD and very little THC. Although hemp is a cannabis plant, it’s not to be confused with its sister plant, marijuana. Marijuana is best known for its higher amounts of THC, the cannabinoid that has intoxicating effects.

People often take CBD to help deal with:

  • Nervousness
  • Appetite issues
  • Discomfort
  • Swelling or tension
  • Boosting overall physical and mental wellness

CBD is often confused with THC, but the main difference is that it does not cause a euphoric “high.” Most people tolerate it very well, and there are very few side effects related to it. Some of the most common side effects are minor and don’t last long. They may include:

  • Dry Mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness

What is CBD Wine?

CBD wine is simply wine infused with CBD! Typically, traditional wine with added CBD oil or dissolved concentrates like Cheef’s CBD isolate can help deliver faster effects and enhance the benefits of traditional wine when consumed regularly. CBD wines can help you relax after a long day while also making it easier to get your daily dose of calm and serenity.

Is CBD Wine Legal?

The sale of cannabis-infused wines is not legal for commercial sale in most parts of the United States. In California, there are specific rules about what bartenders, liquor retailers, and cannabis sellers are allowed to do with their licenses. This can make it difficult to find CBD wine in most bars or on liquor store shelves. Remember to research whether or not your state allows CBD-infused alcohol!

Wine containing hemp is a legal alternative that has the same great benefits as regular CBD wine. However, most CBD-infused wine is dealcoholized wine and infused with hemp or hempseed oil. Be careful because you might find some cannabis wines that are actually infused with THC, which will get you high.

Despite the laws regarding CBD-infused alcohol and cannabis-infused beverages, there are no rules that say you can’t make your own homemade CBD wine! It’s a fairly easy process too!

How to Make CBD Wine At Home

Making your own CBD wine at home can be especially convenient and cost-effective. It allows you to customize and make the wine exactly to your liking and adjust the potency accordingly. There are different ways of infusing wine you already have with CBD:

Using CBD Oil

The fastest and easiest way to make CBD-infused wine is to add a few drops of CBD oil to your favorite wine! To get started, find a good quality CBD oil from a reputable brand. Cheef Botanicals offers our full-spectrum CBD oil made with organic hempseed oil to create a high-quality CBD oil tincture that will go perfect with whatever wine you choose.

Check to see that you like the taste of your CBD oil beforehand. Some oils can have a slightly earthy taste that might change the complexity of your wine.

If you’re trying CBD wine for the first time, start with a regular dose until you get used to the effects! Adding more than you’re used to could potentially cause you to become sleepier than you’d like or otherwise make you sluggish and groggy. Start with one glass first to feel how mixing CBD and wine are, and then increase the dosage as you see fit. After that, mix well and enjoy!

Using Flower “Tea Bags”

For a more flavorful experience, you can make homemade CBD “tea bags”. You can dip the dried CBD flower bags in your wine, much like you would brew a cup of chamomile tea. To do this, you should first:

  1. Dry out CBD flower: This process is also called “decarboxylation,” which activates the CBD by heating it. Place your buds on a baking sheet lined with foil. Break up the flower and remove any stems and seeds, which can cause a bitter taste. Cover with more foil and bake at 230°F for about 1 – 2 hours. Keep an eye to make sure it doesn’t burn – time may vary depending on the strain you use!
  2. Break up into coarse pieces: Take your dried out flower and break up the buds into coarse pieces (powder will slip through the holes in the cheesecloth)
  3. Make cheesecloth baggies: Take a cheesecloth and tightly tie your CBD flower into a little “baggy.” You can tie the cloth into a knot or use regular cooking twine for this.
  4. Pour wine into a crockpot: Pour an entire bottle of wine into a crockpot.
  5. Add CBD baggies: Add the CBD baggies to the crockpot of wine. (You can add spices and herbs too to create a uniquely spiced cocktail!)
  6. Slow cook on a low setting: Set your crockpot on the lowest setting and let the concoction steep for 2 hours. Keep an eye on the mixture to make sure it doesn’t burn. Some wines cook faster, and some crockpots have different low-heat settings than others!
  7. Let cool and enjoy: Once your wine has cooked, pour it through a sieve to collect any bits that might have escaped the CBD baggies. Cool that bad boy, and you have your CBD-infused wine!

White Wine Vs. Red Wine

The type of wine you choose will affect the overall potency and flavor of the final product.

White wine is better for infusions because it has a lighter aroma that allows a more harmonious combination of wine tannins and CBD. Darker red wines like a cabernet sauvignon have more tannins, making for a more bitter aftertaste, which might make the CBD less palatable. For red wines, mixing in a little bit of sweetener or juice to create a cocktail can help offset some bitterness.

What Are the Benefits of CBD Wine?

Separately, CBD and wine have their benefits. When working together, their effects are boosted and can give you a more relaxed and holistic experience.

Benefits of CBD

Regularly consuming CBD can improve your quality of life! Enthusiasts love it for its holistic properties and calming effects. CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors located in your body that support your endocannabinoid system (ECS). A well-supported ECS helps you reach homeostasis, which can help you sleep better, reduce feelings of irritation, relieve discomfort, and regulate appetite and digestion. Consistent consumption can improve your overall wellness significantly.

Benefits of Wine

Wine is renowned for being rich in antioxidants that help lower bad cholesterol and improve heart health. Research has shown that you extend your life by a couple of years from drinking 1-2 glasses of wine per day. Wine can also lower your chances of developing a life-threatening illness or condition. Red wine, in particular, benefits digestive health by lowering blood sugar, boosting prebiotics in the intestine, lowering the risk of liver damage, and keeping blood vessels healthy.

Combined Effects

By combining the benefits of both CBD and wine, you can potentially:

  • Improve heart and gut well-being
  • Combat the effects of aging
  • Reduce the likelihood of developing serious conditions and illnesses
  • Boost mood
  • Improve mental wellness
  • Reduce stress
  • Alleviate swelling and discomfort
  • Help you relax
  • Improve the quality of sleep and fall asleep faster
  • Boost resilience against illness

Why Do People Choose CBD Wine?

People love CBD-infused wine for the health benefits of wine combined with the therapeutic properties of CBD. Especially if you are a wine lover, this is the perfect opportunity to take your favorite drink to the next level. For some, you might feel a little sleepier than usual, but studies have shown that CBD and wine together may help boost many benefits like added feelings of relaxation and calmness.

Not only does CBD-infused wine help keep you in tip-top shape, but it also tastes great! Wine lovers especially enjoy the taste of their favorite bouquet blend, and those that find the taste of plain CBD oil to be unpleasant can enjoy it instead with a little taste of fine wine.

Coffee—like wine—is a good source of antioxidants as well as other important nutrients.
