How to Calculate CBD Content Fast! [A Simple Explanation]

So, you decided to try CBD oil because you heard so many good things about it! The next step is to decide what size bottle or potency is right for you and determine if the price is fair. Most CBD manufacturers make products in different strengths and sizes to accommodate the various needs consumers may have. Finding your correct potency or strength is based on your needs or personal preference.

With all of these variables amongst products, how do we know if we’re getting our money’s worth? One way to tell is to understand facts about CBD, look at the price of CBD content and determine how much they charge for each mg of CBD. To figure this out, you will need to know how to calculate and compare the price of CBD content.

What is CBD Potency?

Some consumers are under the impression that bigger bottles of CBD oil have the same potency as smaller ones and the only difference is an increase in volume, but that’s not the case. The potency can increase tremendously between different CBD products. A higher potency product results in a smaller dosage size in comparison to a dose from a less potent product. In addition, higher potency products are usually the better value, but to determine this you need to know how to calculate and compare the price of the CBD content.

What is CBD Content?

CBD content is simply the amount of CBD in the entire product or in a specific volume amount. For example, If we focus on a 15ml CBD tincture bottle that contains 600mg of CBD oil the CBD content is 600mg. Now, in comparison, if we focus on a 15ml tincture that contains 1200mg of CBD oil we can notice that the bottle is the same size but the 1200mg CBD content is more. If we like, we can further break this down to see the amount of CBD per ml in each option.

How to Calculate CBD Content

To calculate your product’s CBD content per unit of volume simply take the amount of milligrams of CBD and divide it with the volume of the container. Let’s take a closer look:

Our smallest CBD tincture bottle is 15ml in volume with 300mg of CBD content, which equals to 20mg of CBD per ml. Our largest CBD tincture option is a 60ml bottle with 3000mg of CBD. This means that our 3000mg bottle offers 50mg of CBD in each ml. That’s 30mg more in each ml in comparison to our smallest CBD tincture. As you can see the CBD content and potency in the larger bottle is much higher in comparison to the smaller tincture bottle. Here is the equation we used to find how much CBD is in each bottle along with an example:

(amount of mg in the product) ÷  (ml of volume) = mg of CBD per ml

300mg ÷ 15ml = 20mg of CBD per ml

So, depending on how often you plan to use CBD, it’s sometimes best to invest in a larger, more potent bottle and divide up your dosage. To make sure you are getting the best value it can be helpful to compare the price of CBD content in each product.

How to Calculate & Compare the Price of CBD Content

If we compare a $30 bottle of 300mg CBD to a 40$ bottle of 300mg CBD, it’s easy to see that the $30 bottle is the better value, assuming the product is similar in quality. However, can you tell me which is the better value between 15ml bottle with 300mg of CBD priced at $25 or 30ml bottle with 3000mg of CBD priced at $125? If you notice each bottle is different in size, CBD content, and price, which makes it a bit more tricky to compare the value.

The best way to determine the better value, in this case, is to calculate and compare how much we are paying for each mg of CBD in each product. To figure this out we can use this simple equation:

(the price of the product) ÷ (the amount of mg in the product) = (price per mg of CBD)

We can use this equation to determine the price per mg of CBD in each product and then compare their values:

  • Example 1: ($25) ÷ (300mg CBD) = $0.08 per mg of CBD
  • Example 2: ($125) ÷ (3000mg CBD) = $0.04 per mg of CBD

Now that we know the cost per mg of CBD in each product we can compare the prices to find the better value. As we can see the 3000mg option is a much better value at $0.04 per mg of CBD. Using this equation, you can determine the best value between any CBD products. Most of the time, a larger volume signifies the better deal, but this is not always the case and sometimes it can save you money to perform a simple price comparison check.

How Much CBD Is Right for You?

Because of the many contributing factors, it can be difficult to gauge exactly how much CBD is right for you. A general rule of thumb would be to use 0.25 mg of CBD per pound of body weight and 0.5 mg of CBD per pound for a strong dose. Keep in mind that there could be a bit of trial and error until you find the right dosage and product that works best for you. If you’re new to CBD you may want to start with a lower dosage and work your way up.

Everyone metabolizes CBD differently, some consumers claim that the best way to find your dosage is to microdose. One form of microdosing is to start with a low amount and increase it every hour until you feel the effects you desire.

Determining Dosage Sizes

As stated before, to calculate your exact dosage amount could prove difficult because everybody has a different weight, tolerance level, diet, and reason for why they are taking CBD. To help get the ball rolling, you can check out our easy to use CBD dosing chart to get an extensive breakdown of CBD dosage. Once you become more comfortable with CBD, you can adjust the dosage to your liking. Here are some examples to get an idea of some common ways people take CBD and measure out their dosage:

Gummies & Capsules Dosage

If you decide to eat CBD gummies, it is relatively simple to measure out. Each CBD gummy is either 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg, depending on the CBD dosage. If you decide to take CBD capsules you will be happy to know that finding your dose is similar to gummies because each capsule will be premeasured as well. Many people prefer gummies and capsules because they are a convenient option.

Tincture Oil Dosage

Some CBD oil tinctures will have measurements on the dropper that indicate portions of a milliliter. Measuring out your tincture dosage requires more attention, but you have the freedom to easily adjust your dosage amount.

One thing consumers should be aware of is CBD tinctures that do not include measurement indications or clear dosage directions. Unfortunately, this lack of information makes it difficult to measure out your personal dose. If this is the case with your CBD tincture oil you may wish to find another brand that provides adequate measurement indications and dosage directions.

Vape & Flower Dosage

The most challenging of all the products to measure out would be CBD flowers and vapes. It is difficult to estimate how much CBD is in each puff since each person inhales different amounts. Our vape carts come in 200mg and 400mg sizes and each puff you can expect 1-2mg of CBD, however that is just a general estimate and exact amounts will vary.

As for flower, since the CBD value changes between each strain, it is nearly impossible to estimate exactly how much CBD you’re getting with each session. One good thing about smoking or vaping is that you can quickly increase your CBD dosage by inhaling more. Still, estimating how much CBD you’re getting is not precise.

Figuring out how to calculate CBD content and your dosage size is not an easy task. It takes some time to figure out the dosage that is right for you. But do not worry!
