PCR Hemp Oil: What is it? Everything You Need to Know

Suppose you have been closely following news in the cannabis industry. In that case, you might have noticed a new buzzword floating around the community: PCR hemp oil.

But first, what is hemp oil? With cannabidiol (CBD) steadily on the rise as the leading alternative wellness remedy, it seems like nowadays there is a bit of confusion on the difference between CBD oil and PCR hemp oil. Allow us to clear that confusion up.

To someone who didn’t know better, it might seem like every other month a new craze finds its way into the public’s mind. It can be quite challenging to keep up with all the latest cannabinoid jargon. Still, in our opinion, this PCR oil trend won’t be fading anytime soon.

Some people think that PCR hemp oil is a product superior to regular CBD oil and should be the go-to when shopping for tinctures. Yet, it still isn’t any easier to understand these claims without first understanding the product itself and how it might differ from other oils currently available on the market.

What is PCR Hemp Oil?

PCR hemp oil is a full spectrum (sometimes referred to as “whole-plant”) cannabinoid oil. It is typically extracted from hemp seeds using ethanol. “PCR” stands for phytocannabinoid-rich. This means that the oil has a wider range and a higher concentration of cannabinoids than regular CBD oil.

This is why PCR hemp oil  is dubbed “full spectrum.” Full spectrum products contain all of the compounds in the hemp plant, including flavonoids, terpenes, and the whole range of cannabinoids (like CBD and up to 0.3% THC). PCR hemp oil’s main ingredient is cannabidiol. While it is possible to extract PCR hemp oil using other methods, ethanol is most common when it comes to keeping these terpenes and cannabinoids in their natural ratios.

The ethanol extraction process can potentially deliver over 20 flavonoids and more than 100 cannabinoids in their most concentrated form! PCR hemp oil may have higher CBD levels, alongside other natural cannabinoids, than regular CBD tincture

Below we have provided a shortlist of some of the cannabinoids included in PCR hemp oil:

  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA)
  • Cannabidvarin (CBDV)
  • Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)

The hemp plant contains over 100 phytocannabinoids. Of these compounds, one of the most in-demand is CBD (or cannabidiol for the scientists out there). CBD can be found in abundance in hemp’s stalk, leaves, and flowers.

Is PCR Hemp Oil the Same as CBD Oil?

Not exactly, though they are very close!  PCR hemp oil is a type of CBD oil. PCR hemp oil is extracted from the whole hemp plant, whereas CBD oil often just comes from the flowers and leaves of hemp. Because PCR contains compounds from the entire plant, it has a richer concentration of cannabinoids and fatty acids than normal CBD oil.

So, what do they have in common? Both oils come from hemp, and they both contain CBD. This means that PCR and regular CBD oil will both provide beneficial effects to consumers. But since PCR may contain a broader range of cannabinoids, it will activate an even stronger “entourage effect.” In other words, phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil may more sensational benefits to the consumer.

The Entourage Effect

When we vaporize, smoke, or otherwise ingest cannabis or hemp products, our bodies take in the hundreds of natural compounds found in the plant. Each of these compounds carries its own unique benefits and effects. When you ingest them together, the compounds synergize and work in harmony, which produces more potent effects than one of the cannabinoids acting on their own.

To illustrate the entourage effect with cannabis, let’s start with the two superstars of cannabinoids: CBD and THC. In one 2010 study, researchers sought to determine how THC and CBD would affect the pain levels in ill patients. The patients were given either an extract containing nearly equal levels of both CBD and THC or given a pure THC extract. The results of this study were quite promising for developing future CBD research.

The entourage effect is one of the largest benefits of PCR oil. Because the product contains so many different cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, the teamwork between all of the compounds creates powerful effects.

What Are the Benefits of PCR Hemp Oil?

PCR hemp oil is thriving as a popular alternative remedy for a vast spectrum of issues. PCR oil has exhibited positive effects in humans as well as some animals, such as dogs and cats. The shortlist provided below should give you an example of what consumers can potentially use PCR hemp oil for and why it is currently thriving as a wellness  product:

  • Promoting Natural Sleep
  • Relieving Nervousness, Worry, and Tension
  • Exercise Recovery
  • Mood Enhancement
  • Supporting Calm and Relaxation

Many of the effects of ingesting PCR hemp oil may also be experienced by individuals who regularly take CBD. Given the similarities between PCR hemp oil and CBD oil, it’s no surprise that many consumers reported a comparable positive impact from taking PCR oil.  This means that PCR hemp oil may have the same potential to help reduce tension, relieve soreness, and promote natural sleep carried by CBD products.

Can PCR Hemp Oil Get You High?

No, it should not. As a full spectrum CBD oil, PCR hemp oil does contain a minimal amount of THC. Though worry not — in order to be legally recognized as a hemp product,  CBD oils may only contain up to 0.3% THC upon being harvested.

To put this in perspective, legal marijuana can contain anywhere up to 30% THC. We hope that you can rest a bit easier knowing that this minimal amount of THC shouldn’t create any intoxicating or psychoactive effects.

Is PCR Hemp Oil Legal?

PCR hemp oil is legal! Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, all hemp products containing no more than 0.3% THC are legal for sale throughout the country (as long as you’re over eighteen, of course). But buyer beware; individual states still retain the full authority to pass their own laws and legislature concerning CBD and its legality.

PCR Hemp Oil Alternatives

While PCR hemp oil and CBD oil are different products, the two will often create the same effects upon ingestion. But, some consumers may not want the full hemp experience for personal reasons, or they may be sensitive to certain compounds. So, alternatives to PCR oil that provide the same benefits without all the extra cannabinoids are still in demand. Below we have provided a few of our options that you may want to check out when considering switching from PCR oil to other CBD products.

Final Thoughts

So, what to do with this information? Well, to start, consumers should recognize that PCR hemp oil is a distinctly different product than regular CBD oil. However, several aspects about it, including its therapeutic potential and specific wellness benefits, make it a close sibling to CBD oil.

As always, when buying a CBD product (or any alternative wellness product), exercise caution and do your research before spending the dollars you worked so hard for. And always make sure to check with your doctor or another health care professional and view and Certificate of Analysis before making a purchase.
