Does CBG Get You High? [Nope! Learn About Its Benefits Here]

CBG? Surely we meant CBD, right? Actually, you are not reading a typo — CBG is a real thing! It is similar to CBD but an entirely different cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. CBD is certainly non-intoxicating, but does CBG get you high?

Even though over a hundred different cannabinoids can be extracted from the cannabis plant, the two most talked-about compounds are CBD and THC. CBG deserves its time in the spotlight, which is why this article explores more about this cannabinoid, its benefits, and whether it gets you high (spoiler alert: it doesn’t).

What is CBG?

CBG (cannabigerol) comes from hemp, so we call it a cannabinoid (meaning “cannabis-derived compound”). Even though hemp is a type of cannabis plant, cannabigerol contains no intoxicating, or “high” properties. Although it is closely related to CBD, cannabigerol has its own benefits that can help reduce swelling, boost appetite, and ease discomfort.

Cannabigerol is sometimes referred to as the mother of all cannabinoids. This is because many other cannabinoids are derived from CBGA (cannabigerolic acid). CBGA turns into cannabigerol, but it also turns into all the other wonderful cannabinoids we know and love.

Once it has transformed into these other cannabinoids, most of the original CBGA from the plant is gone. However, we genetically select hemp plants that have the highest possible CBGA content. This allows us to extract CBG much more efficiently and make it more easily available to you!

What Are the Benefits of CBG?

Although CBG’s effects are still being studied, the research so far has suggested many potential benefits. There are some similar effects when compared with CBD, but cannabigerol comes with its own unique benefits.

Many people with dry skin have been turning to CBG. Studies have suggested that these individuals have the right idea. Certain cannabinoids such as cannabigerol can produce more sebum, the oily substance that hydrates the skin.

Producing too much sebum can cause acne and other skin issues, but that’s where our old friend CBD comes in! CBD can help decrease sebum levels for those with naturally oily skin. Working together, CBD and CBG generate a balanced skin routine.

In addition to skin benefits, cannabigerol interacts with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and helps maintain the body’s sense of homeostasis. We’ll take a closer look at the ECS in the next section, but for now, let’s focus on homeostasis. Homeostasis refers to an internal balance through temperature, appetite, mood, and many other properties.

These are some of the ways cannabigerol helps our internal balance:

  • Promotes natural sleep
  • Boosts appetite
  • Relieves upset stomach (A 2013 study confirmed CBG’s potentially positive effects on inflammatory bowel disease).
  • Eases soreness and discomfort
  • Reduces swelling
  • Promotes an overall healthy lifestyle

How Does CBG Work?

There are several different methods of consuming cannabigerol, but the process is similar to how CBD works. Upon taking cannabigerol in whatever form you choose, it interacts with cannabinoid receptors throughout our bodies. This interaction boosts our ECS, encouraging homeostasis. The ECS is the system that helps maintain and regulate certain body functions such as breathing, heart rate, appetite, digestion, mood, sleep, and many others.

Since cannabigerol contains 0.3% THC or less, it does not induce grogginess, “brain fog,” or paranoia. In other words, you won’t get high. How you consume cannabigerol plays a significant role in how quickly it interacts with your ECS. Cannabigerol is versatile and has a wide range of benefits. No matter which method you prefer, you’ll still get its soothing and reinvigorating effects!

Does CBG Get You High?

No, cannabigerol does not get you high. THC is what causes intoxication, and there is little-to-no THC in cannabigerol products. Even when there are trace amounts, this only serves to round out CBG’s effects. We cap our THC at 0.3%, which is far below the amount required to experience any intoxication.

All this is to say that CBG is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid. It connects with and boosts your ECS, providing you with beneficial effects without undesired ones.

Are There Products With CBG That Get You High?

As we mentioned previously, CBG will not get you high. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for making people feel intoxicated or high in larger quantities. Although products containing 0.3% Delta 9 THC or more are not federally legal, many states allow recreational marijuana to be sold with higher concentrations than this level. The more THC is in a product, the more likely that the product will have intoxicating effects.

If you live in a state where marijuana products can be sold, be sure to check that any CBG products you’re buying have a low amount of THC within them or that they’re derived from hemp plants. To avoid experiencing intoxication, we recommend you look for products that contain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC.

Some CBG products won’t contain THC at all, and these will always be a safe bet if you don’t want to experience any of the effects of THC.

CBG Formulations

CBG products generally come in three formulas: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate. Here’s a bit more about what those differences mean:

  • Full Spectrum CBG: These products contain a complete cannabinoid profile. They include THC and other cannabinoids.
  • Broad Spectrum CBG: These products will still contain other natural components from the cannabis plant. The main difference between broad and full spectrum is that broad spectrum does not contain THC.
  • CBG Isolate: This product is made up of 99% CBG and contains no THC.

Is CBG Legal?

Yes! CBG is legal. According to the 2018 Farm Bill, the growth and sale of hemp products in the United States are legal. Though, while hemp is legal, marijuana is still federally illegal. What’s the difference?

The federal government defines hemp as any cannabis plant that has 0.3% THC or less. Once it goes over 0.3%, that cannabis plant is then considered marijuana, and it must be destroyed. CBG is federally legal, but states still reserve the right to restrict its sale if they choose. It is best to double-check your state’s regulations concerning hemp products before purchasing.

Can You Overdose on CBG?

No, you cannot overdose on CBG. This is essential because there is nothing to overdose on. While taking too much of anything can result in unwanted side effects, you’d have to consume massive amounts of cannabigerol to experience them.

There is a chance that some people’s bodies won’t agree with cannabigerol as well as others, but it should not be to the point that an overdose occurs. If you have any hesitation about taking cannabigerol, be sure to talk to your doctor.

 Possible Side Effects Of CBG

Like CBD, CBG is generally well-tolerated by most individuals. However, if you consume more than your recommended dose of CBG, you may experience mild side effects. These side effects are usually short-lived in nature and may include:

  • Dry mouth. When your salivary glands absorb CBG, it can affect saliva production in your mouth.
  • Mild diarrhea. This is more likely to occur if you ingest your CBG, as it has to pass through your digestive tract to be absorbed.
  • Drowsiness or fatigue. While some people enjoy this effect, not everyone likes feeling midday sleepiness.
  • Shifts in appetite. This one varies a lot from person to person — while it may act as an appetite stimulant for some, others may not feel hungry at all after consuming CBG.

While many of these side effects can be remedied pretty easily (for example, if you’re experiencing dry mouth, you can sip on a glass of water), they usually won’t require much help and will pass on their own in time.

The best way to completely avoid any possible side effects of CBG is by taking your correct recommended dose. If you’ve never consumed CBG or CBD products before and are unsure where to start, your best bet is usually starting small and working your way up. Try consuming half a dose and seeing how you feel — you can always try more later or next time if you decide your starting dose was too small.
