Diabetic cardiomyopathy occurs when there is significant damage to the heart muscle. This damage causes the heart to not pump blood properly and may cause diastolic dysfunction (where the chambers of the heart fill with blood).  This leads to heart failure that has fatal results if left unchecked. Heart failure can also cause an accumulation of fluid in various parts of the body, most notably in the patient’s legs (peripheral edema) and/or the patient’s lungs (pulmonary edema).
