Historians believe that the first soap was made around 2800 B.C., by the Babylonians. Meanwhile, the first recorded use of cannabidiol (CBD) dates back to 2727 B.C. China. Is it just a coincidence that these two products arose at almost the exact same time in different parts of the world? Perhaps it was a sign that humanity was ready for a more enlightened and healthy lifestyle. It hasn’t been until recent years that the combination of these two ancient products has been so popular.
Now that CBD soap is here to stay, we’re here to answer any and all questions you might have!
Cannabidiol soap is the same sudsy experience you’re used to, except it’s been infused with high-quality CBD oil. Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD, is a cannabinoid in cannabis that comes from the hemp plant.
Hemp has been used for millennia in textiles, clothes, and many other industries. Hundreds of compounds can be extracted from hemp, including beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes. These interact with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) to promote soothing and relaxing feelings.
Bathing after a long day of work can clean your skin, but it can also destress and declutter your mind. CBD boosts this relaxation, promoting calm and tranquil feelings. Regular soap scrubs your outsides, but CBD soap may just have you feeling squeaky clean inside and out by the time you step out of the tub.
Cannabidiol soap, just like CBD oil or CBD lotion, comes with all of the same beneficial properties as other CBD topicals. Earlier we mentioned our endocannabinoid system, or ECS, and how cannabinoids like CBD can interact with it. Our ECS regulates homeostasis within the body by assisting our breathing, mood, stress, digestion, heart rate, and more.
CBD communicates with the ECS by interacting with special cannabinoid receptors in your body. The reason why CBD works topically is due to the fact that you also have cannabinoid receptors all over your skin. Applying it to your skin provides a soothing and rejuvenating sensation that may ease or calm minor skin irritations.
High strength topicals may ease soreness or tension. Your body already creates cannabinoids naturally, called endocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that come from plants, interact with our ECS the same way our endocannabinoids do.
In this way, plants and humans share a biological connection. While some cannabinoids, like THC, bind to receptors in the ECS, CBD has a different impact. CBD instead influences our ECS to create more of its own natural endocannabinoids.
The story goes that soap was discovered by those who would wash their clothes in rivers that were downstream from animal sacrifices.
The animal fat would mix with the water to create soap, and people found that washing their clothes, and even themselves, was a whole lot easier with this new sudsy discovery. Fortunately, we no longer need to sacrifice any animals to make soap. Today, we utilize the fatty acids of oil instead of animal fats.
These fatty acids are mixed with lye (sodium hydroxide for bar soap, potassium hydroxide for liquid) to make the foundation of most soap. For CBD suds, cannabidiol is added into the mix. Some manufacturers may also choose to put essential oil or herbs in their products.
Cannabidiol-infused soap often contains between 20 mg of CBD and 100 mg of CBD, though products with higher or lower doses are also out there.
CBD is generally handled well by most who take it, even in high doses. However, some consumers have reported dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness, or fatigue. It is always a good idea to start with a low dosage and go up from there. This will decrease the chances of mild side effects, leaving only the soothing properties.
Cannabidiol soap as a product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and if you’re taking a medication you should consult a physician before use.
CBD soap will not get you high. CBD’s cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is well-known for its intoxicating and psychoactive effects, but cannabidiol does not have these properties. You may see CBD oil-infused soap that is labeled as “broad-spectrum” or “full-spectrum,” and this refers to which cannabinoids have been kept in the oil.
Full-spectrum CBD contains THC in addition to other components extracted from hemp, though not enough to cause the consumer to feel any psychotropic effects (0.3% or less). Broad-spectrum CBD has everything that full-spectrum does, except it has no THC.
Why keep the THC in if it won’t get you high? Well, this is due to something called the “entourage effect.” This effect refers to the boost in CBD effectiveness when all of the components naturally found in hemp are ingested at the same time. This synergy is present in broad-spectrum CBD as well, but it is even stronger in full-spectrum products.
For those who would rather avoid THC altogether, broad-spectrum offers all of CBD’s benefits without tetrahydrocannabinol (and is still somewhat boosted by the entourage effect).
CBD soap is 100% legal. Some states may not allow certain CBD products or have other stipulations, but hemp has indeed been legalized by the United States government.
Make sure to research your state’s specific regulations when it comes to CBD products. Also, some stores that sell CBD only allow those over 18 or 21 to enter the premises, so you’ll have to call ahead to ensure you can buy hemp or CBD products if you are around or under that age.
