The Blueberry strain (sometimes known as “Berry Blue”) may not be a household name like OG Kush or Pineapple Express, but it is very popular among cannabis experts. It typically comes from marijuana with a high THC concentration. However, you can also enjoy this strain in the form of federally legal CBD Blueberry hemp flower!
This Indica strain has a long history, and it continues to win hearts with its relaxing effects and reminiscence of blueberry pie. It can be difficult to find the Blueberry strain in its CBD form but don’t worry. We can recommend other strains with similar effects. Keep reading to learn all about Blueberry CBD and similar strains.
CBD Blueberry Strain: Lineage
The Blueberry cannabis strain is a cultivar developed through the crossbreeding of two distinct strains. It originates from the combination of Purple Thai (also known as “Oregon Purple Thai” or “OPT”) and Thai (sometimes referred to as “Thai Stick” or “Thai Sticks”). This breeding results in a vibrant flower with rich red and purple hues.
Strain History
The history of this strain goes back 50 years to the 1970s when an American cannabis farmer named DJ Short started to experiment with crossbreeding different varieties of cannabis seeds. He focused on landrace strains, which are strains that developed without human intervention (the opposite of cultivars). After decades of experimentation, DJ Short settled on a combination of Purple Thai and Thai, birthing the Blueberry seeds we know today.
However, he did not create any CBD Blueberry cannabis seeds at that point. For years, growers were only using marijuana seeds to grow the Blueberry strain. Unlike CBD Blueberry seeds, these variants contain high levels of Delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Marijuana and high-THC products are federally illegal, and they typically don’t have much CBD.
Fortunately, in 2018, the United States federal government legalized hemp-derived CBD products under the 2018 Farm Bill. The bill required that legal hemp products do not contain more than 0.3% THC. This opened the doors for hemp farmers to experiment with breeding to create high CBD concentrated strains. Some farmers started growing Blueberry CBD seeds, creating a federally legal, low-THC version of this highly popular strain.
Type of Strain
Blueberry is an Indica-dominant strain. It has a hybrid ancestry because its parent strains (Thai and Purple Thai) have Sativa-dominant genetics. However, for many people, the Blueberry CBD strain has a more balanced effect than pure Indicas.
CBD Blueberry Flower Effects
Since Blueberry CBD is an Indica-dominant strain, it delivers especially relaxing effects. It is a great strain to enjoy as you wind down and prepare for bed at the end of the day. Of course, you will also get to take advantage of the many benefits that come from CBD, including:
- Helping to relieve aches and body discomfort
- Promoting a natural sleep cycle
- Encouraging appetite and digestive processes
- Soothing mental distress and persistent worries
Typically, there are little to no side effects from smoking hemp flower or consuming any other CBD products. CBD has minimal potential side effects, and as long as you stick to the right amount, you should be in the clear. To determine how much CBD you need, check out the handy chart on our website. Even if you take too much, the effects are usually short-lived and go away after a nap! They may include:
- Drowsiness
- Lightheadedness
- Mild stomach upset
- Increased hunger and thirst
CBD and THC Content
Let’s get into the actual cannabinoid content of the CBD Blueberry strain, starting with the CBD and THC levels. Keep in mind that potencies may vary slightly depending on the crop or farm.
- CBD: 16-20%
- THC: <0.3%
Other Included Cannabinoids
CBD and THC are the most famous cannabinoids, but they are not the only ones. Currently, we know of over 100 cannabinoids in existence. New research continues to discover cannabinoids we never knew existed before! As far as the Blueberry CBD strain goes, it typically contains the highest concentrations of these other cannabinoids:
- THCa: 0.783%
- CBDa: 19.384%
- CBGa: 0.675%
Flower Smell and Taste
It should be no surprise that this strain has a tantalizing blueberry flavor. The sticky buds smell like fresh berries, intermingled with the familiar sour scent of hemp. When you inhale, you’ll notice that notes of mango and woodsy pine complement the blueberry taste.
CBD Blueberry Terpene Profile
Hemp flower gets its taste and aromas from terpenes. Terpenes are the natural chemical compounds that give many plants their smell and flavor. If you have ever walked through a forest or enjoyed a cold glass of beer, your taste buds have terpenes to thank for it. Now, let’s meet the terpenes present in the Blueberry CBD strain.
Myrcene
Myrcene is the most abundant terpene in hemp plants. Its musky aroma is a big part of the “funky” smell we associate with cannabis. You can also find myrcene in many common herbs, including thyme, lemongrass, and bay leaves.
Pinene
Although myrcene is the most common terpene in cannabis, pinene is the most common terpene in the entire plant kingdom. It is a primary component in the sap of coniferous trees in forests around the world. Do you like the smell of Christmas trees? If so, you love pinene.
Bisabolol
Bisabolol is one of the rarer terpenes in nature. Aside from cannabis, it primarily occurs in just two other plants: German chamomile and the Brazilian candeia tree. Of course, many of us have enjoyed a cup of chamomile tea at some point in our lives, giving you a sense of what bisabolol smells and tastes like. It has a lightly sweet, floral aroma that is just as soothing in CBD flower as it is in your teacup.
Terpineol
Terpineol has a great deal in common with pinene, and you will often find them together in nature. Like pinene, terpineol has a lovely, woodsy aroma. It also has a sweet scent that many people liken to lilacs. You have probably encountered terpineol without even knowing it because it is a common ingredient in perfumes and scented candles.
Caryophyllene
Caryophyllene is the second-most common terpene in cannabis behind myrcene. It has a peppery aroma and flavor that complements the sweet flavors of the Blueberry strain quite nicely. You’ll also find caryophyllene in the spice aisle as a major component of black pepper, cinnamon, oregano, and rosemary.
Similar CBD Hemp Strains
Blueberry CBD is great, but this strain remains pretty rare to find, despite its long history. You aren’t likely to find the CBD version in many stores. Fortunately, we know a couple of very similar strains to Blueberry and can give you similar amounts of CBD! Better yet, you can get them right here at the Cheef Botanicals shop.
- Zkittles (20.38% CBD): If you want fruity flavors, you can’t do better than Zkittles. It delivers an explosion of fruit and berry flavors, just like its candy namesake. Another Indica-dominant strain, Zkittles is a great choice when you want to chill and let your cares float away.
- Northern Lights (20.73% CBD): One of the most famous cannabis strains in existence, Northern Lights is a soothing Indica-dominant Hybrid. It shares many terpenes with the Blueberry strain, including myrcene, caryophyllene, and bisabolol.
Best Ways To Use Hemp Flower
Hemp flower is the simplest form of CBD, coming straight from Mother Nature herself. You can enjoy this hemp strain with the same devices you use for consuming any other cannabis flower. Here is a quick rundown of your options:
- Joints, Pre Rolls, & Blunts: Joints and blunts are some of the best ways to quickly get your next hit of CBD. You can buy rolling papers at any smoke shop. Try Cheef Botanicals’ CBD pre-rolls, which are ready to smoke right out of the box for a more convenient option.
- Pipes, Bongs, & Bubblers: Pipes are slightly different from tobacco pipes, so make sure you buy a pipe designed for cannabis flower. Bongs and bubblers are examples of “water pipes” that filter the smoke through a water chamber to make it easier on your lungs.
- Dry Herb Vaporizers: You are probably familiar with vape pens that use a cartridge of CBD e-juice. However, you can also buy vaporizers for dry herbs. Just grind your hemp flower, put it in the chamber, and let the device come to temperature. Then, you’re ready to vape!
Final Thoughts – CBD Blueberry
Blueberry CBD strain is a great option when you want to relax, but it isn’t always the most convenient. Because this strain is not as widely available as many other varieties, it can be hard to come across and typically goes for a high price. Fortunately, you have other great options.
Zkittles and Northern Lights could be the perfect strains for you, but it pays to try a wide variety. We carry over a dozen strains of premium CBD hemp flower. Check out the Cheef Botanicals store to stock up today!
